ACEL Celebrates International Women's Day

As we join together this week to mark International Women’s Day there are a number of MISSIONS to help forge a gender equal world.  IWD focuses on the experiences of women and girls; recognising and calling out inequality; reflecting on lessons from the past; celebrating women's achievements and increasing visibility; and uplifting women to pursue goals without bias or barriers.

Creating an inclusive world will happen with intention and action.  This year’s theme is  #ChooseToChallenge.  What will you choose to do?

Leadership diversity, is key

The evidence for leadership diversity is powerful – enhanced insight, more ideas and information, significant productivity lever, better decision making and positive outcomes as a result.

#ChooseToChallenge to shine a light on effective leadership and expand our expectation of what leaders look like.  Harness ALL the potential and talent that resides within and profile leadership diversity in all its forms. ACEL has a role to play in this and seeks to highlight not just what leadership is, but what it can look like.

Education, and access to education, is key

There are many resources to support and stimulate conversations with colleagues and students.

  • Gender construction impacts on our choices and expectations. Like a girl challenges perspectives, turning limiting notions of gender and devaluing the feminine into a story of strength and empowerment.
  • Unconscious gender bias results in women and men being labelled differently despite displaying the same leadership traits. Choose to identify and challenge bias head on.
  • Education is not freely available to everyone - and in many parts of the world girls are the first to be excluded from it.  When you invest in girls everything changes. The Hon Julia Gillard AO and patron describes how the CAMFED model radically improves girls’ prospects of becoming independent, influential women.
  • The Mala Fund Report (2021) A greener, fairer future: Why leaders need to invest in climate and girls' education,  estimates that in 2021 climate-related events will prevent at least four million girls in low- and lower-middle-income countries from completing their education.

Advice for aspiring female education leaders: Claiming voice through a both/and approach to gender

By Dr Barbara Watterston, Educational Consultant and Author,
Dr Jane Kise, Education Consultant and Academic, University of St Thomas, Minnesota

Leadership is about impact and influence. Is there one best fit or are there many ways of being a leader? Is leadership still a gendered concept? Being a school principal is typically about the end game – data, results, administration, management – and about creating the enabling conditions for teachers to do their best work. This involves testing and evaluation as well as personalisation to bring depth and richness to our decisions about student learning – and so much more.
