The World’s Wildness Lies in Wait : The Five Pavilions of System Change
Michael and his team have been working directly on education and system change with specific jurisdictions since 2004. It is system change but it is grounded. In this keynote he will focus on 5 themes, each of which constitutes fundamental elements of system improvement in a non-linear world. They are referred to as ‘pavilions’ because they represent fascinating, dynamic domains of system improvement.
The five are: 1)the fate of equity and excellence are inextricably bound; 2) system change is top down, bottom up and sideways, 3) basics and global competencies are intertwined, 4) being good at learning and good at life are the twin goals of education—they have an individual and a collective face ,and 5) nuance leadership abounds. Participants will be challenged to deepen their work in at least one of the pavilions.

Leading by Learning
When principals and school leaders are the leading learners in the building, school culture transforms. When school leaders understand formative assessment themselves, and when they look at what students are doing in classrooms – not just what teachers are doing – they are able to support the kind of formative assessment that moves student achievement forward. This kind of leadership builds a learning culture in a school and is formative for all the actors: students, teachers, and leaders. This keynote will help participants become leading learners in their own schools.
