Tom Bentley is a writer and policy adviser based in Melbourne.
He is currently Principal Adviser to the Vice Chancellor at RMIT, and an Honorary Senior Fellow at the University of Melbourne’s Graduate School of Education. His most recent book, co-edited with Glenn Clifton Savage, is Educating Australia: Challenges for the Decade Ahead (MUP 2017).
From 2007-13 he was Deputy Chief of Staff and senior policy adviser to Julia Gillard, Prime Minister of Australia 2010-13 and Education Minister 2007-2010. From 1999-2006 he was Director of Demos, an independent think tank based in London. From 1998-1999 he was special adviser to David Blunkett, Secretary of State for Education and Employment.
He has contributed to education and innovation reforms around the world, working with institutions including the OECD, the Gates Foundation, NESTA and the Copenhagen Business School. He is a member of the Victorian Deputy Premier’s Expert Panel on education reform.
