Speaker Bio:

Murray Guest – Headmaster, The Armidale School

Murray Guest has been Headmaster of The Armidale School, an Anglican GPS co-educational boarding and day school in Armidale, northern NSW, since July 1998.

During his tenure at TAS he has overseen two of the most historic changes in the school’s history. Previously governed by an Ordinance of the Anglican Diocese of Armidale, Murray, together with the then School Council, in 2009 modernised the School’s governance structure into a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee, under the Corporations Act (and other legislation). This new scaffolding allowed for the transfer or responsibility to be shared equally by four key stakeholders in the School – the Anglican Diocese of Armidale, the Old Boys’ Union (now Old Armidalians’ Union), Parents and Friends Association and the TAS Foundation, in a broader and more representative fashion.

This change, while important, did not visibly alter the character of TAS – that would be left to the decision in 2015 to explore, consult and ultimately introduce full co-education to TAS the following year. Working with the School’s Board and Executive, Murray successfully led the transformation and re-branding of what had been a senior boys school for 121 years into a school that welcomed a significant number of female students as boarders and day girls across all year groups, in just 18 months.

His vision and experience in areas such as strategic planning, community consultation and stakeholder negotiation have been reflected in record enrolments and a dynamic future for TAS and make him well placed to talk about effective Change Management.

Murray was educated at Sydney University and UNSW and has taught at a range of schools in Sydney and the UK. Prior to joining TAS he was Head of Timbertop at Geelong Grammar School.
