QLD Early Childhood Network: Visual Art in Early Childhood

QLD Early Childhood Network: Visual Art in Early Childhood

Al Ohlsen is a Lecturer in Initial Teacher Education at Queensland University of Technology. Having previously studied in the fine arts and taught in the classroom, Al has a particular interest in how educators’ and teachers’ attitudes may affect children’s learning experiences. Al is currently completing a PhD in Early Childhood and Primary preservice teachers’ experiences, attitudes and beliefs in visual arts.

This workshop explores how we can develop meaningful art practices with young children. We will consider the heart of what art is, and how we can engage in artful experiences. We will explore how we can set the scene for more deeply valuable art-making and engagement experiences with young children. Illustrated with practical examples, this workshop will introduce ideas for teachers in the Early Years to explore; both for themselves and with children. Curriculum connections will be highlighted throughout the workshop, as will the meaningful integration of art to studies of other areas.
