VIC ACELNET: Leading School Improvement

Where: University of Melbourne, Graduate School of Education, 100 Leicester street, Carlton, Level 9, Frank Tate Room
Research is revealing the powerful impact that school leaders and their teams can have in improving the quality of teaching and learning. Effective leaders create cultures of high expectations, provide clarity about what teachers are to teach and students are to learn, establish professional learning communities and lead ongoing efforts to improve teaching practices.

The National School Improvement Tool is based on a synthesis of extensive school improvement and effectiveness literature and field testing by the Australian Council for Educational Research and the Queensland Government, and is underpinned by an expectation of leadership that displays a passion for improvement and drives an explicit agenda. It suggests that the most effective strategy for improving student achievement in schools is to improve the quality of day-to-day teaching and learning rather than focusing purely on desired outcomes and targets. Elizabeth Hartnell-Young will share some of the ways in which the National School Improvement Tool is currently being used in Australia.
