WA Hot Topic: Engaging Students - Engaging Parents
Parent: How was school today?
Child: Fine.
Sound familiar? Sound engaged?
As Hattie (2009) explained, students themselves and their parents have a big impact on student learning. So our mission is to actively engage all students and parents to create the best possible learning environment for students.
Both the AITSL National Professional Standards for Teachers and for Principals require the engagement of parents as partners. We should “engage and work with the community” (principals) or “engage professionally with colleagues, parent/carers and the community” (teachers).
A major 2009 study in Western Australia that tracked 1,300 students found that about 40 per cent of students displayed unproductive behaviours regularly in a given year. Of the unproductive group, a surprisingly high number (over half) were compliant but disengaged – they were inattentive or lacked
motivation. Research shows that we need to tackle student disengagement with preventative strategies such as: having high expectations; building strong teacher- student relationships; ensuring clarity and structure in instruction; ensuring active learning. We must also be responsive by providing encouragement and praise as well as consistent correction and consequences.
So how do we engage students and parents authentically and with the intention of improving students learning? How can we build a productive partnership with both students and their parents? What are people doing in WA and around the world to build these relationships and develop these pedagogies of engagement and responsiveness?
