You Cannot Make Me! 
Transitioning from Punishment to Problem-Solving with Students who Present with Challenging Behaviours.

Most educators would agree that challenging behaviour in students is on the rise. Come to think of it, so too, is challenging behaviour in adults! Sitting behind this are a set of complex socio-cultural factors and a a school discipline approach that is no longer fit for purpose. With schools adopting Restorative Practice as an alternative approach to relationship building and the repairing of harm, there remains a tension in many communities around the role of consequences and our reluctance to relinquish our attachment to behaviour modification strategies that imply behaviour is a choice.

Ross Greene's Collaborative Proactive Solutions (CPS) Model offers schools the critical missing piece - a simple, structured, evidence-based process that affords young people a say in solving the problems that affect their lives. It's proactive (early), not reactive (late). It focuses on on working "with", not doing "to", or "For" students. It's a reminder that no matter how much we try as adults we cannot make a student change their behavious because we said so. We need to be better than that. And once we understand the important motivational theory of Self-Determination, and that doing well is preferrable, we begin to see the real power of working collaboratively, and proactively with young people.
