2023 ACEL Currie Lecture presented by Laureate Professor Jennifer Gore

Jenny has had a long and varied career across the educational sectors. From a start as a secondary physical education teacher to her current role as the Laureate Professor of Education and leader of the Teachers and Teaching Research Centre at the University of Newcastle her passion and commitment to the progression of the education profession is evident in all that she does. She holds a Master’s degree from the University of British Columbia, Canada (1983), and PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA (1990). Jenny has been widely recognised for her contributions to the field, through awards such as the Australian Council of Deans of Education award (2017) for outstanding contribution to education reform and the Paul Brock Memorial Medal (2018) for outstanding contributions to social justice and evidenceinformed policy, practice and research. She was formally appointed as Visiting Professor at the University of Oxford. Jenny’s educational and research interests have consistently centred on quality and equity, and have ranged across topics such as teacher socialisation, alternative pedagogy, power relations in teaching, reform in teacher education, pedagogical reform, and teacher development. As a leading academic in teacher education, Jenny has driven research through her own significant publications (more than 10,400 citations) and through her roles on the Advisory Board for other government-funded studies, as well as a reviewer for research in Australia and internationally. Jenny has had an impact across government, catholic and independent school systems, especially in NSW and the ACT in the field of professional learning and Quality Teaching.
