ACEL QLD: What is Effective School Governance?

This session will delve into the critical aspects of school governance, featuring insights from distinguished panellists:

 Anthony Micallef | BA, DipEd, MA (Syd), MACE, MACEL, Sabbatical (Harvard), MAIC

Anthony Micallef is the 12th Headmaster of Brisbane Grammar School, commencing in the role in 2014. He is a graduate of the University of Sydney and has also completed a sabbatical at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Anthony has taught in several independent boys schools in Brisbane and Sydney where he fulfilled leadership roles in the academic, student wellbeing and cocurricular domains. For the past 30 years, Anthony has served Brisbane Grammar School in a number of key leadership roles. He combines his strong academic, pastoral and sporting background with a collaborative style of leadership and an ardent belief in creating an inclusive educational environment, where individual strengths can be encouraged and nurtured. Anthony serves on the Board of the International Boys Schools Coalition. 


Johannes Solymosi
| MBA AICD School Services Deputy Director

Johannes Solymosi holds the position of Assistant Director (School Services) at Independent Schools Queensland in which he oversees the delivery of the ISQ Governance Program. With experience as an educator in Germany and Australia, he has been the principal of two Queensland independent schools.  Johannes facilitates board and principal performance reviews and consults on strategy, risk and corporate restructures. He advises board chairs and directors on effective governance practices and supports schools in the management of high-stakes regulatory issues. In a previous role, he conducted school improvement reviews around the state. Johannes holds several not-for-profit board positions, has degrees in Education and Business Administration (MBA), and is a graduate of the AICD Company Directors Course and Oxford University’s Executive Leadership Programme.

 

Greg Ewing  | BSc MAICD. State Manager Queensland at Australian Institute of Company Directors

Greg is an experienced enterprise leader with a demonstrated strategic perspective across multiple domains in the non-profit, for purpose management industry. Skilled in negotiation, business planning, operations management, analytical skills and coaching.
His many years working in member engagement has resulted in excellent insight into the membership journey, an understanding of the need to build strong enduring relationships, build member value, and deliver service excellence through a member-centred approach.


Megan Kavanagh |  Partner, Colin, Biggers and Paisley Lawyers

Megan is best known for her work in equal opportunity, discrimination, unfair dismissal, harassment and diversity, work health and safety, and industrial relations. Across this skillset, her work extends to executive level risk management and governance advisory work. She is also an experienced employment litigator and defends claims in the industrial, discrimination and human rights, workplace health and safety, and civil jurisdictions.

Megan holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Human Resources and Industrial Relations in addition to holding a Bachelor of Laws. She was admitted to practice in Queensland on 1 November 2000.
