Evidence informed strategies for school leaders to consider in their pursuit of success for all learners in all contexts.
This webinar will focus on the challenges of achieving equity and excellence in education. It will consider what school leaders can practically do to secure principled improvement that fully embraces diversity, equity, inclusion, and equality. While there are no silver bullets in the race for more equitable education, there are practical steps that school leaders can take and important signals that every school leader can send to embrace and engage all learners, as well as enhancing the learning of the most marginalised and vulnerable students. This webinar makes no apologies for looking at the barriers to equity, head on, and fully acknowledges that schools are doing much of the heavy lifting around equity. The webinar will explore ways in which more progress can be made in pursuit of equitable education, it will share the international evidence on systems that achieve equity and excellence and will highlight some strategies that school leaders, at all levels, might consider in their pursuit of success for all learners in all contexts.
Dr. Alma Harris
Dr. Alma Harris, FAcSS, FLSW,FRSA, is Professor of Education and Deputy Head of School at the Swansea University School of Education in Wales, UK. She is internationally known for her research and writing on school leadership and system improvement. Dr Harris has written extensively on middle leadership and distributed leadership in schools. Dr Harris is a consultant to the World Bank and is Past President of the International Congress for School Effectiveness She is committed to equity and excellence in education. Her latest book (with Dr Michelle Jones) System Recall-Leading for Equity and Excellence in Education was published by Corwin in 2020. Dr Harris is an International Education Adviser to the First Minister and Deputy First Minister of Scotland. Dr Harris has recently been elected to serve on the Council of the Learned Society Wales. She has been a keynote speaker at two ACEL conferences and remains a firm advocate and supporter of ACEL.
System Recall : Leading for Equity and Excellence in Education
This book argues that much of what passes as contemporary educational reform in education is faulty and damaging. It argues that it is time for a ‘system recall’ and a need to look at what matters most in the pursuit of educational goals.
The book focuses on what we know about contemporary educational improvement, transformation, and change. It will provide insights into what strategies work, long term, to build the capacity for principled change at the school and system level.
