Originally from Queensland, Kathryn Leo grew up on a fresh produce farm on a small island off the coast of Gladstone. Kathryn is a descendent of the Budjari people of South-West Queensland and has always been a passionate advocate for recognition for Australia's first peoples. At University, Kathryn studied journalism before changing to a Visual Arts degree majoring in Contemporary Australian Indigenous Art. She then won an internship as an Education Officer at the Queensland Art Gallery, which inspired her to study Education and become a teacher. Kathryn taught in and around Brisbane before pursuing her dream to work on country, in community, as a role model to other Indigenous children. Kathryn worked at Alekarenge in the Barkly region of the Northern Territory, before winning her first principalship as a Teaching Principal at Urapunga School, in the Katherine region. Kathryn is now in her fourth year as Teaching Principal of Milikapiti School on the Tiwi Islands. She is enjoying being back on an island and catching big fish in between leading her remote teaching team and learning dance routines with her students.
