ISSUE 6 - MAR 24 2021

The ACEL National Disability & Inclusion Conference, in partnership with the Department of Education QLD, took place on 15th – 16th March in Brisbane. As our first face to face event in over 12 months, we were delighted to welcome and engage with 300 delegates in addition to those who could access the conference online. The energy in the room was palpable with significant discussion taking place on the benefits to all students and communities of an inclusive education, where everyone has a sense of belonging and connectedness.  Key messages emphasised the important role of school and system leaders to further this through implementation of policy and an open culture that listens to and responds to the needs of students and families enabling differentiation and adjustments.

We look forward to continuing the journey together.  And, as emphatically shared by our final keynote Paralympian Lakeisha Patterson, the focus on – every student, every ability, every success.

NEW June Webinar Series - "Leading Staff Wellbeing" with Amy Green

This webinar series, led by Amy Green from Real Schools, is designed to put the wellbeing of staff at the centre of what leaders and their schools do. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of what individual and collective wellbeing means and identify the key drivers which can then be used within the school context. Participants will be guided through the difference between self-care and wellbeing and how the former can enhance the latter. Drawing these threads together, Amy will demonstrate how schools can embed these approaches and move from a reactive model to one where wellbeing has a collective and ongoing place within the school culture.

Advice for aspiring female education leaders: Claiming voice through a both/and approach to gender

By Dr Barbara Watterston, Educational Consultant and Author,

Let’s start with a simple cloze exercise. After all, we teachers love a cloze exercise.
Fill in the missing word:

When the disruption of COVID-19 is finally behind us, we will have discovered that ________ was the most important thing all along.

I’ve already asked this question to countless School Leaders and have found that their responses have been consistent and interconnected around words such as relationships, wellbeing, mental health, growth and connection. When I put it to them that a useful banner under which to put these under is school culture, I’m yet to be argued with.
