NEW KEYNOTE SPEAKER - Rhonda Faragher

Inclusive Education Across the Lifespan:
The leader’s role in aligning philosophy, policy and practice

Inclusive education, the philosophy, policy and practice of welcoming and meeting the needs of all learners in general classrooms, is well researched and its benefits for education for all are without question. The challenge remains, though, of aligning philosophy, policy and practice at a school level to ensure inclusive practice in classrooms. In this presentation, some fundamental principles will be covered that have implications for teaching practice, including: using Educational Quality of Life to inform curriculum decisions; planning for individuals while planning for all; and making adjustments to year level curriculum for learners with intellectual disabilities. Examples will be used to illustrate these principles with a focus on the leader’s role in supporting the implementation of inclusive practice in any education setting.

Teachers’ responses to remote learning during COVID-19: Lessons for leaders as co-learners

By Dr Donna Evans, Professional Learning Communities practice coach, Catholic Education Tasmania (CET) and Debbie Baird-Bower, Educational Data Analyst for Catholic Education Tasmania (CET)

In this article, we discuss the major findings of a state-wide teacher survey undertaken by Catholic Education Tasmania during COVID-19 lockdown conditions (Evans & Baird-Bower, 2020). Our aim was to gain a sense of how teachers were faring during this difficult time. Catholic Education Tasmania is the second-largest non-government educational institution in Tasmania, with more than 2,500 personnel employed in non-teaching and teaching roles in 38 schools and colleges across the state with offices in Hobart, Ulverstone and Launceston. Whilst the timing of this project was particularly challenging, seeking to gather responses in the midst of lockdown around the time of a cluster outbreak in Burnie (resulting in the locking-down of the north-west region of Tasmania, home to ten Catholic schools and colleges), it was the very nature of these difficult circumstances that provided a rich opportunity to gain a “systemness” snapshot of how staff were coping.
