The 2019 ACEL National Conference in Sydney will provide a platform for international and national speakers to share their expertise in highlighting the importance of both “Vision and Voice” in Setting the Learning Agenda.

2nd - 4th October, Hilton Sydney

Educational leaders have the privilege of setting the moral purpose, expectations, culture, as well as learning and teaching practices within their organisations. They strive to develop future-focussed cultures, reflect on their practices, engage in professional development, and most importantly, influence student learning. ACEL’s flagship National Conference will be held in Sydney from the 2nd to the 4th of October. The conference theme of ‘Vision and Voice – Setting the Learning Agenda’ provides the platform for international and national speakers to share their expertise, research and best practice in bringing these two key elements to life.

As part of this year’s conference ACEL are proud to announce the return of the Australian Storytellers Spotlight. A highlight of last year’s conference this year we have the pleasure of welcoming one of Australia’s most recognised and award winning authors John Marsden, plus best-selling and beloved children’s author and illustrator Matt Stanton. Both authors will be an integral part of National Conference 2019 sharing their unique career journey and their approach to engaging our youth via storytelling on Day 2 including meet and greet and book signing sessions.

John Marsden has written more than 40 books, mostly for teenagers and children, including Tomorrow When the War Began, So Much to Tell You, and Letters from the Inside. He has sold over five million books worldwide, and has won every major award in Australia for young people's fiction.

South of Darkness, written for adults, won the Christina Stead Award for Best Novel of 2015. In August 2019, John’s newest book, The Art of Growing Up, a non-fiction work about education and parenting, will be published.

John's passionate interest in education led him to start two schools, Candlebark, situated on a vast forested estate near Romsey Victoria, and Alice Miller, at Macedon, a Year 7-12 school with a particular emphasis on the creative arts. The two schools enrolled 380 students in 2019.

Matt Stanton is a bestselling children's author and illustrator, with more than half a million books sold. He is the co-creator of the mega-hit picture books There Is a Monster Under My Bed Who Farts and This Is a Ball. He launched his much-anticipated middle-grade series, Funny Kid, in 2017. The first book in the series, Funny Kid for President, debuted as the #1 Australian kids' book, and Funny Kid is fast winning legions of fans around the world. He lives in Sydney with his wife, bestselling picture book creator Beck Stanton, and their three young children.

Keynote Address: Assessment-Capable Learners
We all know that collective efficacy is the new number one influence on students’ learning. And there is good reason for that. In part, efficacious teachers ensure that their students are assessment-capable, which means that students understand their current level of performance and compare that with the desired level of learning. Assessment-capable learners and their teachers select direct, dialogic, and independent learning approaches they know will help attain their shared learning goals. They also seek feedback from others, provide others with feedback, and monitor their learning from acquisition through consolidation to mastery.
