ACEL QLD: In Dialogue

ACEL QLD: In Dialogue

The seminar will use the following Statement from the ACELQ Statement of Commitment to the Profession as a stimulus:

I offer a spirit of optimism, resilience, and hope as I support young people to develop and act on the values, beliefs and capabilities that guide them throughout their lives.

The aim of the seminar will be to reflect on the role of wellbeing – student, teacher, leader wellbeing – in leading learning and on building optimism, resilience and hope. This seminar will include presentations on current research in teacher and leader wellbeing from Professor Annemaree Carroll and Dr Lance Newey. Participants will engage in dialogue with researchers about what this research might mean in practice to support optimism, resilience and hope for leaders, teachers and students.

Speakers:

Annemaree Carroll

Annemaree Carroll is Professor of Educational Psychology in the School of Education at The University of Queensland. She is a registered psychologist and teacher, with her research activities focusing on understanding the impact of emotions, attention, and behaviour on learning throughout child and adolescent development, developing innovative emotion regulation interventions for children, young people and teachers to bring about positive change in their lives, and implementing strategies that can be translated into educational outcomes. In this presentation, Annemaree will introduce the model of social and emotional well-being which she has conceptualised with her colleagues to be particularly relevant to learning contexts, ensuring a balance between life goals and available resources required to meet these goals. She will then briefly provide an overview of her research conducted on teacher well-being and the downstream benefits to students.

Dr Lance Newey

Dr Lance Newey is a Senior Lecturer in Social Entrepreneurship in the UQ Business School. He works will leaders, organizations and communities to help make wellbeing their central mission.
In this presentation, Dr Newey will   share why the leadership game in business and society has changed towards a greater focus on wellbeing. He will also share why he himself had to change as a teacher to stay relevant to these demands. His presentation will include reflection on what wellbeing is, what it consists of and how best to create it. Dr Newey will share his empirical wellbeing model and discuss the fundamental role of ‘counter-balance’ to maximizing wellbeing. Recently, Dr Newey has been working in partnership with a number of Brisbane Secondary and Primary schools to help translate his research to develop a new generation of wellbeing leader.
