QLD Branch News

Message from the Branch President, Karen Fox

20/09/2022

As Term 3 ends for those in schools, we hope that members can enjoy some time for relaxing and regrouping over September. There’s so much to mention in this newsletter about ACEL Q Term 3 events and what is planned for Term 4. Please read further but here’s a quick summary:

  • ACEL National Conference (28 – 30 September)
  • Queensland preconference networking event (Tuesday 27 September)
  • Queensland’s 2022 National ACEL Award and New Voice Scholarship recipients
  • ACELQ Awards Ceremony thanks and photos
  • Term 4 Date claimers
  • Wednesday 12 October - Pivotal People Brisbane
  • Wednesday 19 October - Pivotal People Gold Coast
  • Wednesday 26 October - ACEL Qld networking breakfast
  • Thursday 27 October - Toowoomba and Darling Downs Forum

First - we thank Selina Fisk for sending through her reflections on being an ACEL member.

ACEL membership has been really helpful for me in zooming out from the day to day or being in schools, to thinking more strategically about the bigger issues and challenges facing Australian schools. The events and resources encourage me to learn from others and think about how new ideas and research can help my practice. For me though, the best thing about ACEL is the network of like-minded educators who come from all sectors and school contexts - there is always so much to learn from others in this network. Being able to hear about the way other educators face similar, yet different challenges helps provide a range of ideas and options for me moving forward. (Selina Fisk)

In each newsletter we aim to highlight members’ responses to our 2022 questions:

  • What does ACEL membership mean to you?
  • What are your thoughts around Leading with humanity and hope?

We encourage members to continue to send your responses for publication.

ACELQ Awards night: Tuesday 23 August 2022
The 2022 ACELQ Awards night was such a joyful celebration of some of Queensland’s exceptional educational leaders representing the diversity, depth, and impact of the teaching profession. We congratulate all recipients and thank them for their service to our educational communities. We particularly thank special guests, ACEL members and Fellows, recipients and guests who travelled – some as far away as Townsville and Darwin – to be with us for the evening.

Special thanks to the Executive Principal, Liz Foster, and staff and students at Wavell State High School for their generous hospitality, friendly assistance and remarkable contribution to the success of the evening.

Term 4 Pivotal People: For middle leaders designed by middle leaders

ACELQ Pivotal People Brisbane

Venue: Coorparoo Secondary College
Time: 5 – 6.30 pm
Topic: Leading with humanity: Imposter syndrome.

I just got lucky! They’re eventually going to find me out!
Ever felt like a fraud at work? Imposter syndrome is a concept common to many middle leaders taking on new or higher positions in schools. In today’s fast-paced workplace, it is easy to be overcome by self-doubt and insecurities at times. Regardless of your individual circumstances or feelings, you are not alone.

Join us at Pivotal People Brisbane’s Term 4 event where guest leaders will share their experiences of imposter syndrome and how they overcame it to flourish and thrive.

Check the Queensland Branch Events section of the ACEL website for details and registration link to come.

ACELQ Pivotal People Gold Coast Date: Wednesday 19th October 2022
Venue: The Club, Parkwood
Time: 5-6.30pm

Topic: Influential leadership: Leading from the middle

We all have the capacity to influence, but what will your influence be? Join with other middle leaders to explore the IMPACT of your influence and how we can lead a tsunami of positive outcomes. During this event, we will take a deep dive to explore how middle leaders can unleash waves of influence to inspire performance, radiating from an ability to find clarity and prioritise clear goals to improve culture from within using the ‘Isaac Issacs’ technique.

Guest Speaker: Thalia Edmonds is an admitted Legal Practitioner and is currently the Industrial Advocate at Queensland Teachers’ Union. Thalia has previously taught instrumental music in various state primary and high schools.

Check the Queensland Branch Events section of the ACEL website for details and registration link to come.

Venue – Pullman King George Square
Time – From 6.45am for 7.00am – 8.30 am

This will be a highly interactive event for early career teachers and leaders to realise the powerful influence as members of a vocation. If you want to shift the public narrative, understand why those who teach still do, and why your voice matters, and your contribution is needed, be there.

Check the Queensland Branch events section of the ACEL website for details and registration link to come.

Looking forward to connecting with members and meeting new members at the national conference and at our state branch events next term
