ACEL - Queensland Awards Information

Dear Colleagues,

I would like to share with you the 2009 Awards presented on your behalf to educational leaders for their engagment and service to education in Queensland and nationally, and for their service to ACEL.

Not deterred by the unusually warm winter weather of late August, an enthusiastic group of awardees, their families, ACEL Queensland members and fellows gathered at Queensland Academy of Technology in Toowong  for the  ACEL (Queensland Branch) Awards Evening.

Following the President's reception, during which participants were entertained by a beautiful  harp performance  and capable food service of the students,  Mr Danny Doyle, DET  acknowledged the traditional owners and performed on his didgeridoo to recognise the elders who have passed. Danny shared with us some of his personal story, and the cultural understanding in regard to the making and use of the didgeridoo.

Mr Jarvis Finger, a 1972 foundation member of ACEL Queensland  - previously known as QIEA and ACEA, captured the interesting 37 year history of the evolving organisation from 1972-2009. He shared with the group the commitment of the foundation members to supporting and developing education leadership for Queensland educators - a focus and intent no less strong today. While no longer an active member of the ACELQ Executive, Jarvis continues to play a pivotal role in the production of  ACEL National publications such as The Australian Educational Leader - previously known as The Practicing Administrator, Ed-Vines, Perspectives and Directions in Education.

Our Director General, Department of Education and Training, Ms Julie Grantham presented the Miller Grassie Address, sharing her vision of leadership and the unfolding future direction of Queensland education.

On your behalf, Ms Grantham was recognised for the significance of her educational leadership in Queensland school and education communities through the awarding of an ACELQ Fellowship.

Awards for long-standing service to Queensland education and ACEL Q Executive were presented by Ms Grantham to Ms Lee Callum, DET, Simon Boss-Walker, DET;  and Mr Colin Sutcliffe, formerly Lutheran Education.

These awardees included Mr Michael Byrne, Brisbane Catholic Education Commission; John Clarke,  DET ;  Dr Jenny Fisher, education consultant; Mr Rob McAlpine, DETMr Stuart Maish, DET;  and Ms Helen Starr, DET.

Associate Professor Neil Cranston, previously University of Queensland,  Dr Jenny Fisher and  Mr Jarvis Finger received  service awards for their contribution to ACELQ Executive. Mr Stephen Loggie, DET was recognised for  previous ACELQ Executive participation, and QASMT's student partnership with ACELQ.

ACELQ Postgraduate Academic Awards were presented to Jacqueline McGregor, University of Queensland; Douglas Kiddell, Queensland University of Technology; Christine Clarke, Australian Catholic University;  and Richard Scagliarni, University of Southern Queensland for their contribution to education research.

The 2007-2008 ACELQ Indigenous Education Scholarship was presented to Mr Scott Goringe, Queensland Institute of Indigenous Leadership. Scott attended the ACEL National 2008 Sydney Conference, and participated in collegial networking and ACEL membership opportunities. ACELQ  have invited his response to you on his scholarship involvement, through a report from him later this year.

Members of the present ACELQ Executive are looking forward to an opportunity to be part of the Institute's Stronger, Smarter programme in 2010.

The 2009 ACELQ scholarship has been presented to Mr Michael Nai, Assistant Principal, Yorke Island. Michael  is looking forward to partcipating at the ACEL National Darwin Conference.
