ACEL VIC Forum: Leading Schools in an Age of Fake News

ACEL VIC Forum: Leading Schools in an Age of Fake News

Disinformation erodes trust in institutions, damages learning culture and saps curiosity. School leaders must be alert to “fake news” and the dangers it poses to students. If, as educational leaders, we are committed to ensuring that students become active, engaged citizens then we need to turn our attention to making sure that educators and students alike are news literate. Everyone should have the skills to navigate the news cycle:  understand where it comes from, who and what shapes it and understand the role of and value of journalism in today’s society.

Join the ACEL Victorian Branch and the ABC in a collaborative event to:

Hear from Annabel Astbury, Head Digital Education ABC who will give an overview of:

    • Research about news literacy and how it can enhance the curriculum
    • The role and value of public service journalism
    • The challenges that face consumers of news (students AND Adults alike) in a world of incessant online information
    • The work being done around the world to support teachers, students and journalists alike to ensure we all become more news literate.
