Outstanding Educators honoured at ACEL National Awards Ceremony

The ACEL National Award winners for 2017 have been honoured at the National Awards Ceremony during the 2017 ACEL National Conference at the International Convention Centre, Sydney on Thursday 5th October.

Our award winners for 2017 were selected for their exceptional contributions to education well beyond their organisations. Aasha Murthy, CEO of ACEL has stated, “I am delighted that ACEL is recognising these leaders in education through the formal ACEL 2017 National Awards. These leaders are at the forefront of developments in education at both a national and international level and have had immeasurable positive impacts on educators and learners”.

ACEL presented the Gold Medal to Emeritus Professor Richard Teese. Emeritus Professor Richard Teese is recognised for his major contributions to our knowledge of education systems, to public policy, and to the wider diffusion of knowledge about how well our schools work and for whom. The impact of Professor Richard Teese’s work extends way beyond his role as Adjunct Professor, Victoria University and Emeritus Professor of Education, The University of Melbourne.

ACEL presents the Nganakarrawa Award to those whose general excellence in educational leadership and whose wisdom, learning, experience and contribution to ACEL have earned lasting respect and gratitude. With its origins in the Ndjebbana language of central Arnhemland, the term Nganakarrawa refers to ‘those who move about, all seeing, all knowing, knowledgeable and well regarded.’ Emeritus Professor Linda Darling-Hammond, CED Chair Stanford University, has been awarded the 2017 Nganakarrawa Award.

ACEL has awarded the Hedley Beare Award to Dr Ken Avenell, Senior Manager: Professional Learning & Leadership Development, Toowoomba Catholic Education, in recognition of his lengthy commitment to educational leadership and his prolific writing on the subject for many years.

The Keith Tronc Award for Outstanding Teacher Leadership was awarded to two outstanding teachers. Rachael Lehr, Science Specialist and Digital Technologies Coordinator, West Beechboro Primary School WA and Shaelee Dunbar, Head Teacher HSIE, Plumpton High School NSW. The contribution Rachael and Shaelee have made has transcended their own classrooms and made a real difference to schools across their states.
