Educational equity and social mobility have become clichés of our times. Andy Hargreaves, one of the best-known speakers in Australia and all over the world, knows all about educational equity and mobility and what we call social mobility. He has experienced what these things look like and feel like, in his bones, right up close. The struggle for equity and mobility, he shows, is anything but a cliché. It’s a personal, powerful and constant uphill battle, needing every teacher working together in support of the young people who need our help the most.
Andy’s brand new memoir, Moving, about a working class upbringing and education, describes in sometimes poignant and sometimes hilarious prose, what the experience of trying to move on up is actually like. It shows how it felt for him and, with reference to research of that time and today, reveals how everything he went through still applies to millions of children and their families now. If you, your parents, or the kids that you have taught have given something up, left behind a homeland, taken on extra jobs, and made a host of other sacrifices, just to get a better chance in life, this narrative will be your narrative too.
What’s it like to get selected for the “academic” school at age 11 and see your brothers go to schools that prepare them for factory work instead? What’s it like to go to school on one side of town and have your own friends there, and live on the other side with different friends (and the neighborhood gang) to manage as well? What do you do when you are failing at a curriculum that makes no sense to your culture or your life? How does your teacher deal with you when you’re far along the ADHD spectrum? How do teenagers manage losing one parent, seeing their other parent have a breakdown, and go on welfare, and have to take charge of the family, instead of the family taking charge of them? How does growing up in one culture and moving into another affect you for the rest of your life?
Drawing on Andy’s highly readable memoir, you will have the opportunity to engage in three intellectually enlightening, emotionally powerful, and highly practical sessions that look at the shrinking state of equity and mobility today and what we can do about it. It will show how instead of making upward mobility an alienating experience for young people, schools and teachers can turn it into a positive one.
