Building Your Leadership Capacity

MENTORING AND COACHING PROGRAM
2-Day Workshop

A core skill is the ability of leaders to mentor and coach their teams and team members across a range of areas including pedagogical practice. Some have more natural ability in this area than others, but all will benefit from this practical and hands-on opportunity to build their knowledge and develop their skills as mentors and coaches.

ACEL has developed a two-day workshop, designed to be directly applicable to leaders and their needs. The facilitator, Sue Simon, brings to the delivery of the workshop an immense understanding of the middle leadership role based on a wealth of experience in a variety of contexts.

“[This workshop] has definitely inspired & empowered me. This opportunity has been both positive & affirming. It was also challenging but in a good way. I now go away with many thoughts and ideas to put into practice at my work place.”

PARTICIPANTS

Leaders in Early Childhood, Primary, Secondary, Tertiary Faculties or government departments.

Participants will

  • Develop targeted mentoring and coaching strategies and skills to use with teachers in schools,
  • Contribute to the teaching content and pedagogical practices of teachers in their schools.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

Two-day face-to-face workshops

CONTENT OVERVIEW

  • You as a Leader – Participants will develop an understanding of emotional intelligence and how it can be developed to grow their effectiveness.
  • Coaching and Mentoring Models – Participants will begin to understand the concepts of coaching and mentoring, the application of a range of different models, and the support structures and resources needed to implement coaching and mentoring successfully in their school.
  • Coaching and Mentoring Skills – Participants will identify, develop and practice skills that effective coaches and mentors must have, including: active listening; building trust; effective questioning; building rapport; and providing feedback for ongoing success.

FACILITATOR

Sue Simon (ACEL Mentor)
Sue has extensive experience in leadership in Early Childhood, Primary, Secondary and Tertiary contexts, in the independent sector. She currently holds a leadership, teaching and research appointment at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, where she undertakes research in school leadership and culture, as well as leadership that focusses on the Australian Professional Standards for Principals. She also oversees the study programs offered by the School of Education; teaches in undergraduate, postgraduate Education programs, and International Principals’ Programs; and researches quality teaching and evaluation of effectiveness of pedagogy.

In each school where she has been principal, Sue has worked hard to improve school culture, staff cohesion, student outcomes and specific aspects of the school’s programs, facilities or strategic vision. Sue has mentored and coached staff and students, and has many years of experience in school and higher education genres. Having worked in both newly-established schools as well as traditional and long-established schools, both day and boarding – and single sex as well as co-educational – Sue believes that she has a broad understanding of different school cultures, expectations and challenges faced by the principal. Her most impactful improvements as principal would relate to facilities overhaul, curriculum re-design, student wellbeing and sense of belonging, the introduction of Arts-related events and learning experiences, and the effective steering of a rapidly-developing school culture at a new independent school where she was foundation principal.
