Collective Efficacy Program

Collective Efficacy, a one-day professional learning workshop, previously facilitated by PAI, explores how the combined effort of a team of teachers or an entire school can support student engagement and academic success.

A collective approach to student success can help schools develop a sense of collective agency and a purposeful, intended course of action to ensure every student within their school experiences success.

Students’ achievement should not be a lottery dependent on which teacher’s class they are in or the postcode they come from. As an integral part of a school team, we all have a part to play in ensuring every student enrolled will succeed – and it is up to all of us to make that happen.

Participants

School leaders, curriculum and faculty leaders, teachers, and professional learning community leaders.

Why collective efficacy?

• Student outcomes are enhanced when everyone in the school believes they have a role to play in ensuring every student achieves.
• A strong collective efficacy within a faculty or school has a direct impact on every teacher’s individual efficacy.
• Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) focussed on student learning can bring about stronger collective agency.

Participants will gain an understanding into the following:

Collective efficacy – impact and creation

• What is the difference between self-efficacy, collective efficacy and collective agency?
• What are their processes and mind frames of highly efficacious people?
• How does collective efficacy influence student achievement? Participants will analyse different approaches to learning.
• Introduction to a model for collective teacher efficacy, and the four sources of efficacy that shape and support collective efficacy.
• Learn how to formulate, influence and change the perceived collective efficacy in your school.

Teacher self-efficacy

• Understand the symbiotic relationship between collective and individual efficacy.

Measuring self-efficacy

• Discuss and analyse the tools for gauging the school’s current climate of efficacy.

Professional learning communities

• The role of PLCs.
• How can PLCs in your schools be enhanced?
• Three critical questions for PLCs.

Leadership and collective efficacy

• The role of leadership in collective efficacy.
• Relationships between collective efficacy, PLCs and site leadership that are necessary to increase student achievement.
• The importance of transformational leadership.

Facilitator

Craig Reid
Craig’s career as a teacher has spanned more than 25 years. He has held leadership roles within schools in South Australia and Queensland particularly in focus areas of behaviour management, parent engagement, student wellbeing and supporting students with disabilities.

Whilst working as a Professional Service Consultant for Principals Australia Institute, Craig supported school in the implementation of the mental health initiative KidsMatter and MindMatters. He also designed a series of professional development workshops for support teachers being their best, which he delivered nationally.

As Education Manger for The Reach Foundation, Craig continues to be a strong advocate for providing safe learning and teaching environments within schools.
