Making Thinking Visible
with Ron Ritchhart

Over the last decade there has been an ever-increasing interest in how teachers can foster deep learning and promote students’ thinking. The use of thinking routines, a practice originating from the researchers at Project Zero at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, has emerged as a key practice in supporting these goals. Thinking routines can not only scaffold and support students in thinking, but also can help to make that thinking more visible to both students and teachers. All of this leads to more responsive instruction. Not surprisingly, as the use of thinking routines has become more popular as a teaching practice, they sometimes get used superficially or as simple activities.

ACEL 2021 Disability and Inclusion Conference

The 2021 Disability & Inclusion Conference is proudly presented by The Australian Council for Educational Leaders (ACEL) in partnership with the Department of Education, Queensland. Featuring experts and leading practitioners in the field of disability and inclusion, the Conference will focus on the ways in which educators can ensure that all students access and engage in learning.

NEW KEYNOTE SPEAKER - Lakeisha Patterson

Patterson is a decorated Australian Paralympian. She won her first international medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, collecting bronze. Patterson achieved another 5 medals at the IPC Swimming World Championships including 1 gold and career best 6 medals at the 2016 Rio Paralympics including 2 gold and 2 WR's.

Patterson has had an inspring story of overcoming obstacles. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy from birth, she took up swimming at the age of 3 as part of her treatment. She is also diagnosed with early onset Parkinson's disease, Epilepsy, and Micrographia. Swimming soon became a passion rather than just rehabilitation, and she was able to connect to the sport in a way that gave her a sense of freedom and belonging.

Mary Jean Gallagher and Michael Fullan

This session will focus on whether the pandemic is/will increase the likelihood that system transformation can be leveraged and developed in 2021. The focus initially will be placed on local level (school and community). Included will be strengthening success through connections with other schools and regions, linking upward to the system as a whole.

Spotlight Interview: Emma Woo

For the final issue of AEL for 2020, we have chosen to do an interview with Melbourne Girls Grammar student Emma Woo specifically about her experiences of being a student through a long period of lockdown in Victoria.

"In addition to societal issues, such as climate change and ongoing social movements, I believe that school leaders should devise strategies to enhance awareness and education of mental health, bullying, and racism. In preparation for 2021, they should also strive to promote an environment of inclusivity, in which students are encouraged to pursue interests and opportunities that engage and excite them."
