JUST ANNOUNCED: ACEL & CORWIN Present Three Special Visible Learning Events this November

These sessions move the focus from the teacher to developing evaluative thinking skills among the students, and are the results of much research and practice by Doug and I on working to teach the students “to become their own teachers”. We will also be adding our new work on student collective efficacy.

Maximising Learning and Impact
Influences that matter the most to Student Learning

SYMPOSIUM WITH PROFESSOR JOHN HATTIE
This day supports participants to identify what has the greatest impact on student achievement and develops capacity to understand the key messages of the Visible Learning research.

The Symposium has been designed for school leaders and teachers who are seeking to embed the latest research into how to further understand, evaluate and maximise impact on learning. Key questions that underpin the day include, What are the characteristics of a culture of impact? How do you define 'impact' in your school? In what ways do you know, understand and maximise it?  How do you know that you are having a positive impact on all of your learners? What are the influences that research identifies has a considerable impact on developing the skill, will and thrill of learning?

FOUNDATION DAY
The Foundation day seminar supports participants to identify what has the greatest impact on student achievement and develops capacity to understand the key messages of the Visible Learning research. This research makes us stop and think about the vast amount we already do know and take stock about what really does make the difference to student learning. The seminar provides practical activities and take-away tools.

The Power of Collaborative Expertise
...Through PLC+

Keeping student learning at the forefront of professional learning communities requires that we also recognise the vital role that teachers and leaders play in the equation of teaching and learning. This means that PLCs must take on two additional challenges: maximising individual expertise, while harnessing the power of collaborative expertise that can be developed with peers. It is critical that we go beyond the examination of student learning and examine teacher learning as well.

Building upon prevailing PLC methodology, the workshop is designed to consider ways of refreshing current collaborative structures and support teachers’ decision making in the context of individual and collective efficacy, expectations, equity, and the activation of own learning.

Participants will walk away with an evidence-based framework and practical tools and strategies to support:

  • Planning and implementation in support of student learning
  • Professional development intentionally designed for teacher agency over their learning
  • Cycles of assessment, reflection, and decisions that lead to greater impact
  • Monitoring collaborative impact on teacher and student learning

Building and Developing Assessment
Capable Visible Learners

Special 1 Day Only Event with Douglas Fisher and John Hattie

The Visible Learning research is clear that when students know how to learn and are aware of strategies to help them learn, they are able to become their own teachers. Imagine students who describe their learning in these terms: "I know where I'm going, I have the tools I need for the journey, and I monitor my own progress." Now imagine the extraordinary difference this type of ownership makes in their progress over the course of a school year.

Join John Hattie and Doug Fisher as they share with you how to make this scenario an everyday reality in your classroom - one that will significantly increase your students' capacity to thrive as they take responsibility for their own learning. Hear them talk about how the right approach at the right time can create classroom experiences that hit the surface, deep, and transfer phases of learning. This will include:

  • Overview of Visible Learning
  • Overview of Assessment Capable Visible Learners
  • Helping students understand their current performance and where they are going
