Ranae Graham is the Assistant Principal of Driver Primary, leading the early years. She is a conduit for helping students, staff and the community deliver education that places the child at the centre of their learning. A passion for engaging children through being, belonging and becoming principles in the early years, is evident through Ranae’s systemic delivery of Age-appropriate pedagogies. Within her community she has driven the implementation of the Families as First Teachers playgroup model, aligned age-appropriate pedagogies to student data and innovated on perceptual motor programs. Ranae strives for high expectations and improved student outcomes for all learners. She has aligned systemic, departmental and community priorities to deliver early years teaching and learning that is responsive to the needs and wants of all stakeholders. She is currently leading the Education Changemakers action learning program for innovative teachers and emerging school leaders to deliver Driver Primary’s Science, Technology, Oral Language, Math and Play, and early years philosophy. Student agency leads community events such as Mother’s and Father’s Day, purposeful play through investigations, application of design technology to inquire and improve the outdoor learning environment, digitech to engage in rich literacy and numeracy and science through a lookalike Stephanie Alexander Kitchen and Garden program. Recognised for its impact and ability to build capacity, Driver Primary was identified as a Tier 1, Universal School for Age-appropriate Pedagogies by the Northern Territory Department of Education. Ranae and her team have assisted remote communities, Darwin and Palmerston regional schools and the Age-appropriate Pedagogies Network to develop strategic planning, implementation and teacher capacity in the early years. She profiled Driver Primary and hosted interstate educators via the national Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher summit in the NT. Beginning her teaching career in 2004, Ranae measures success not by her own achievements but by the success of students, staff and systems to achieve growth. As a Cognitive Coach, Visible Learning Impact Coach, instructional leader and mentor, Ranae has improved teacher capacity and student outcomes in wellbeing, literacy and numeracy through regional sharing of pedagogy. As a result, Ranae received national certification as a Highly Accomplished Teacher in 2011. She continued to develop her instructional leadership across a range of contexts in the Darwin and Palmerston area. Furthering her advocacy for the teaching profession, Ranae qualified as a Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher Assessor. She coaches and mentors national certification applicants to demonstrate their evidence of impact. Facilitating early career mentoring, Ranae has trained as a Panelist Stage One for Initial Teacher Education, where she identifies the essential skills and processes required to ensure graduate success. Ranae is the Australian Literacy Educator’s Australia (ALEA) NT secretary. She has supported the delivery of external presenters at a regional level including Kath Murdoch, Misty Adoniou and planning of the 2021 NT ALEA national conference. Ranae utilised professional learning from the ALEA national conference to further impact on improved English as Additional Language or Dialect pedagogy for staff and students at Driver. In recognition of her contribution to improving student outcomes regionally and her active engagement with professional associations, including ACEL, Ranae was selected to attend the STEMX Academy in 2018. Following the academy Ranae facilitated a Driver site visit and Science at Sunset evening with world renowned Astrophysicist and Cosmologist Brad Tucker for the Darwin community. Student agency, voice and the development of curious, independent learners through inquiry, are integral to the ongoing commitment Ranae has made to leading effective pedagogy in the early years.
